SEMrush is an SEO company for online marketers and helps your company gets discovered on the Internet.

Their business model is subscription based and can upsell you with addons. And they want to be the one-stop shop for search engine marketing. They provide a suite of 50+ tools for SEO, online advertising, content marketing, social media, and market research. And marketers can use those tools for keyword analysis, scheduling social media posts, getting your website exposure, and monitoring the competition.

The company relies on a combination of technologies collect information on millions domains, billions of keywords, and trillions of backlinks. This allows marketers to improve their influence online and prepare their strategies online.

I don't use their service myself but whenever I look for SEO opportunities and when I Google around a lot of times I ended up on their website. So in terms of SEO at least they're doing a pretty good job for themselves.

They have a few other notable competitors like spyfu or ahrefs.com. But as far as I know they're one of the leaders in SEO marketing tools & service.

Here are some key figures from their S-1:

https://i.imgur.com/qUOvfcV.png

  • Their 2020 revenue growth rate is around 35% yoy with a net dollar retention rate of 114%.
  • They have around 67000+ paying customers.
  • They have around 980+ employees.
  • Their gross profit margins are around 76%.

S-1 honestly looks pretty boring I'd say. Also in terms of valuation of p/s 25 ish they're actually pretty cheap considering they grow 35% a year. But they're in a niche that people would keep coming back. And for marketing maybe you would use multiple tools at the same time so it's not like for database you pick one and you stick to it for the rest of your life so in that sense maybe the valuation is still ok.

Pricing:

They offer a base monthly pay package for a small price. At the same time they also offer you a list of stuff they you can purchase to monitor your marketing campaign. And consider they have 50+ tools they seem to be able to upsell you fairly easily. This is also confirmed by the 114% net dollar retention rate that customers would keep coming back to them when they're doing marketing.

It's interesting company to look into because of their relatively cheap valuation among their SaaS peers $SEMR. The technicals seem to suggest they would continue to move up in the short term. But for the $10~ IPO price the p/s ratio was only around 15-16 for a company growing around 35% a year and in retrospect that's definitely too cheap.
